During the meeting, Mr. Harris conveyed the gratitude and appreciation of the President and Government of the United States to President Barzani for his support and efforts in helping facilitate the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces.
Regarding Iraq’s political process, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires reaffirmed the United States’ continued support for a strong Kurdistan Region within a federal Iraq.
President Barzani welcomed the delegation and expressed his appreciation for America’s role and supportive stance toward the people of Kurdistan. He noted that without the United States’ position and support in 1991, it would not have been possible to safeguard the gains of the uprising or to establish the Kurdistan Region’s parliament and government.
Both sides exchanged detailed views on Iraq’s political process and stressed the importance of adhering to the constitution. They also agreed that Iraqis themselves must decide their country’s affairs on the basis of partnership, balance, and consensus.
In this context, the two sides welcomed the recent dialogues and consultations held in Baghdad aimed at clarifying and developing political mechanisms and scenarios that reflect Iraqis’ interests and help ensure stability.
