The Head of Foreign Relations Office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hoshyar Siwaily met with MR. Mortaza Abadi the Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Erbil and the accompanying delegation.

The Consul general of the Islamic Republic of Iran congratulated the Head of the Foreign Relations on his new appointment and expressed his willingness to further advancing the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iran.

Mr. Siwaily highlighted the historic and economic ties between the two sides and as the Halabja commemoration was approaching, he referred to the high level humanitarian intervention by the Islamic Republic of Iran during the Chemical attack on Halbja in 1988, as an example of the role of the Islamic Republic in providing support and assistance to Kurdistan in time of need.

It was emphasized by both sides that Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran have strong economic relations and Mr. Abadi expressed his country’s willingness to further strengthen these relations.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the importance of the meeting between President Barzani and Mr. Muhammad Javad Zarif, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the Munich Security Conference.

The meeting was concluded by the two sides discussing regional challenges that pose a great threat to peace and security in Iraq and the wider Region. It was agreed by both sides that the Kurdistan region and the Islamic Republic of Iran need to maintain strong positive relations and mutual understanding as the region is going through a difficult period.
