President Barzani Visits Syrian Refugee Camp in Duhok

President Barzani visited the Domise refugee camp in Dohuk today, a camp whose inhabitants are Syrian refugees fleeing the Assad regime. The Domis refugee camp has a population of approximately 4000 refugees, and hundreds of new refugees arrive on a daily basis. The President was warmly welcomed by the refugees, the overwhelming majority of whom are Kurds from northern and northeastern Syria. The refugees expressed their gratitude for the KRG's policy of receiving them, but also expressed concern over the total number of refugees rapidly increasing if the situation in Syria remains unresolved. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR predicts the number of Syrian refugees in Iraq to reach 15,000 by the end of the year. The Kurdistan Regional Government, in close cooperation with UNHCR, provides assistance to these refugees and simultaneously prepares for the number of refugees to rapidly increase. The sub-district of Domis in located in the route between Dohuk and Mosul. President Barzani visited a number of refugee families and spoke of the Kurdistan Region's willingness to continue tp provide support for the Syrian refugees, hoping for a better future for them.
