This is the place where historical sources of life continued for 6,000 years.

Erbil Citadel is located in the center of Erbil, with an area of ​​110,000 square metres. This citadel is an important archaeological area, and dozens of important sites have been discovered inside the castle, which prove the validity of the history of the continuity of life in it without interruption. It has walls and is considered one of the oldest remains and archaeological finds that were found in the Citadel of Erbil, dating back three thousand years. There is also the Temple of Ishtar in the Citadel of Erbil, and dozens of other signs and indicators that demonstrate that this Citadel was the center of civilizations thousands of years ago.

Restoration of Erbil Citadel

Erbil Citadel was included in the World Heritage List by the United Nations UNESCO in June 2014, but the Kurdistan Regional Government had begun restoring the Citadel since 2007 in order to preserve its authenticity and historical status.

About the citadel, Bafrin Abdul Qadir, the supervising engineer in the High Commission for the Restoration of the Castle, told the official website of the Kurdistan Regional Government: “The Erbil Citadel includes more than 500 houses. In fact, UNESCO supports us technically, meaning that we receive any information, support and advice we need from UNESCO, and it also monitors our work to find out what stage we have reached, and we have to send annual reports to them and inform them of our work.
