President Barzani receives Ambassador of France to Iraq.

On Sunday, June 9, 2024, President Masoud Barzani received Ambassador Patrick Durel, Ambassador of France to Iraq.

The meeting discussed the political and security situation in Iraq and the Middle East in general and the challenges and obstacles facing stability in the region.

During the meeting  the friendly relations between the Kurdistan Region and France were highlighted and both sides  emphasised the importance of further advancing and promoting these relations.

President Barzani thanked France and said that the Kurdish people will never forget the friendly and positive role of the French people and government that have been sympathetic and supportive of the Kurdish people in difficult times. He also referred to the role of President François Mitterrand in passing UN Security Council Resolution 688 in 1991 and establishing a safe zone to protect the Kurdish people.

At the end of the meeting, the Kurdistan Parliamentary elections scheduled to be held this year were discussed and the need for clean and fair elections was emphasized.
