Barzani and US ambassador to Iraq discuss Kurdistan situation

Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday 16 April received the United States Ambassador to Iraq, Steven Beecroft, and his accompanying delegation consisting of officials from the American embassy in Baghdad, at a meeting in Erbil to discuss the current political situation in the Kurdistan Region and its relationships with neighbouring countries.

 

During their meeting, the two sides held talks of the elections scheduled for late April in Kurdistan and in Iraq. In addition to evaluating the campaign process and the expectations of the results of the election, they emphasised on the importance of the outcome.

 

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) focused on the region’s position on the outstanding issues between Erbil and the central government in Baghdad, saying it can only be resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding.

 

Mr Beecroft expressed his country’s support for discussions between Erbil and Baghdad to reach a solution to problems that is in the interest of Iraq, while expressing his thanks to the KRG for solving problems through dialogue and the exportation of 100,000 barrels of oil per day is a positive step forward.
