President Massoud Barzani received a delegation from the European Union, led by Ms Jana Skova, EU envoy to Iraq and combining ambassadors and representatives of a number of EU countries to Iraq
.
At the beginning of the meeting, Ms Skova expressed gratitude to President
Barzani for the opportunity to meet with him. She also stressed the importance
of the strategic relations between the EU, Iraq, and Kurdistan. Ms Skova
congratulated president Barzani for the success of the electoral process that
took place in Kurdistan and conducted democratically, and praised the democratic
experience in Kurdistan as a new model in the Middle East, referring to European
embassies' representatives experts that have visited many areas of Iraqi
Kurdistan during the elections and the active participation and competition
Board of admiration.
President Barzani, welcomed the delegation and welcomed the positive impressions
European countries regarding the elections, saying that the success of this
process increases the morale of the people of Kurdistan.
President Barzani noted, that during the mass meeting in 1991, which took place
in the town of Koi Sanjaq,
said that Kurdistan, since then, has implemented democracy, and has gone from
revolutionary legitimacy to constitutional legitimacy, by way of election,
despite all the shortcomings, Kurdistan elected constitutional legality and is
democratically going forward.
During the meeting, which was specially held to talk about the political
situation in Iraq, President Barzani focused on the participation of the EU, the
role of the Kurds and the national partnership in the future of Iraq, and about
the understanding of the problems.
President Barzani referred to the First World War when Iraq was established on
the basis of partnership between the two main nations, the Kurdish and the Arab
nationalities, but the partnership did not apply.
Barzani said after the liberation of Iraq, the Kurds decided to remain within
Iraq, which has been the ratification of the Constitution, and hoped that all
duties and rights on the basis of partnership and coexistence, but unfortunately
there disagreements regarding the Constitution.
During the meeting, President Barzani focused on the elections that were held on
April 30, where he confirmed that these elections are the last chance for Iraq
to implement the partnership.
On the question of calling Kurdistan to participate in the next Government in
Iraq, President Barzani stated that a partnership must be demonstrated and the
Constitution must be applied so that all Iraqis feel they are participants in
the political process. President Barzani also stated that the Iraqi army should
be established on a national basis and the problems of the Peshmerga movement,
must be solved. As well as the ratification of the law of oil and gas, the
general census, and to solve all the major problems that occur within
institutions established outside the Constitution.
Regarding the Kurdish demands for a Kurd regaining the Presidential position of
Iraq, President Barzani said, despite this honorific position, it will be best
to wait until after the official results of the election have been declared and
to see which post is better, while it will be preferable to have the Presidency
post and consider it a national entitlement to Kurdistan.
During the meeting, they also discussed the future and the role of the Kurdish
political process in Iraq, as well as the Syrian refugees inhabited in
Kurdistan.
