Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani received the Special Envoy of Poland’s Foreign Ministry, Stanislas Mullen, for talks on the current crisis in northern Iraq.
Mr Mullen arrived in Erbil on a cargo plane which was carrying humanitarian aid for the thousands of internally displaced people on Mount Sinjar.
During the meeting, Mr Barzani expressed his appreciation for Poland’s assistance before moving on to talks on the recent security developments in northern Iraq where Peshmerga forces are on the frontline battling with militants of the so-called ‘Islamic State’.
Mr Barzani underlined that Kurdistan is awaiting international relief efforts to provide the necessary aid to thousands of displaced persons and refugees in the province.
Mr Mullen emphasised his country’s support for the Kurdish territory and said he was satisfied of successful push-backs of IS militants by the Peshmerga, while highlighting the conclusion of Friday’s meeting of European Union foreign ministers who affirmed humanitarian and military support.
