At the outset of the security conference held in Munich, President Massoud Barzani held talks with Brett McGurk to discuss the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levante (ISIL) and other issues such as the economic crisis in the Kurdistan Region.
Mr McGurk, who is the Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, reiterated his country's commitment to provide further military support for Peshmerga forces. The meeting was attended by the US Deputy Secretary of Defence Robert O. Work, who pledged to increase assistance to the Kurdistan Region.
The Kurdistan President emphasised on the political and security situation in the region, highlighting the potential liberation process of Mosul, relations between Erbil and Baghdad. In light of the impending referendum, Mr Barzani said the Kurds have a right to decide their own future
