In order to resolve the political crisis in the Kurdistan Region, Massoud Barzani has said that there should be a new leadership of government and parliament and urged parties to choose a suitable candidate for president and make decisions on the region's political future.
The Kurdistan Region's president made the comments during his Newroz address, where he congratulated the people on celebrating the Kurdish New Year.
Referring to his own presidency, which has extended beyond the fixed term, he repeated a call on political parties to end the current political impasse, saying the best way forward is to reactivate the parliament, elect its new presidency and form a new cabinet.
Kurdistan Parliament has been temporarily suspended since late 2015 and Mr Barzani believes the best solution is to restore and form a new administration. The political situation intensified over the Kurdish leader's presidency after the major parties failed to conclude an agreement on his replacement amid high-level discussions. The region witnessed violent demonstrations and a number of Kurdistan Democratic Party offices were incinerated.
Mr Barzani also sent his best wishes to the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, praising their fight in a war that began in August 2014 after the militants attacked Kurdistan.
