Content of President Masoud Barzani’s Meeting with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister

As part of his visit to Italy, President Masoud Barzani met with H.E. Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, in Rome.

The meeting addressed the political situation and broader developments in the region—particularly in Syria—as well as the risks posed by a potential resurgence of ISIS. Both sides underscored the need to resolve disputes and outstanding issues through dialogue and peaceful negotiations, away from violence, war, and conflict.

In another part of the meeting, the Italian Foreign Minister commended President Barzani’s wise role in safeguarding coexistence and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He also expressed appreciation for President Barzani’s efforts to promote peace and stability in Syria, so that Syria’s Kurdish population does not face further hardship.

Kurdistan Region–Italy relations were also discussed, with both sides emphasizing the importance of further strengthening cooperation across all areas. Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s support for the Kurdistan Regional Government and the people of Kurdistan.
