On a formal invitation by the EU parliament a delegation from Kurdistan Democratic Party Foreign Relations Office visited Brussels on 28-30 June to attend a conference on (The future of the Christians in Iraq). On the first day of the visit and before the commencement of conference, the delegation met the representatives of European People’s Party (EPP) at the party’s headquarters in Brussels to strengthen bilateral relations and to brief the party on the current developments in Kurdistan Region.
During the meeting the EPP was represented by Patrick F.P. Voller, the Party’s Secretary of External relations and Ajla Verhulst-Hotic, political Advisor for Middle East and North Africa Affairs. The current fight against ISIS, the role of the Peshmerga forces in the Mosul operations, the IDPs and the future developments in Iraq after the defeat of ISIS were discussed. The head of the KDP-FR shed light on the historical decision by most of the political parties in Kurdistan to hold a referendum this year and the justifications for this decision.
The EPP representatives expressed their appreciation to the role the Peshmerga has been playing and to the assistance provided by the KRG and the people of Kurdistan to the IDPs and the refugees who have taken refuge in Kurdistan Region. Most of the discussions centred on the issue of the referendum. The EPP representatives showed their understanding and appreciation to the decision and hoped that the process would be conducted in a peaceful way.
At the end the delegation invited EPP to visit Kurdistan and send observers to monitor the referendum on 25th September.
