Chancellor Masrour Barzani met today Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Jan Kubis, to discuss developments between Erbil and Baghdad.
Both officials discussed conditions necessary to resume dialogue. Chancellor Barzani underscored Baghdad has yet to take practical measures to facilitate unconditional talks despite steps taken by the Kurdistan Region. The Chancellor faulted political developments ahead of national elections as obstacles, noting Baghdad must identify a time-limited framework without preconditions to settle differences based on the full implementation of the Constitution.
Speaking about UN's efforts to kickstart direct talks, Mr. Kubis referred to the recent statement by the UN Security Council calling for peaceful means to settle political disputes. He reaffirmed both should hold immediate, direct talks resorting to the Iraqi Constitution to address differences.
