At the meeting, the latest political situation and developments after the election in Iraq were discussed, and views were exchanged on the formation of the new Government and the decisions of the Federal Parliament on the election and its results. The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq informed President Barzani about the opinion of the international community and the major countries related to the political process after the election in Iraq, as well as the United Nations view on the concerns about the future of Iraq and the post-election period. He expressed the readiness of the United Nations to assist in the political process in Iraq and to address the problems between Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, as well as article 140 of the Iraqi constitution.
On his part, after referring to the pre-referendum phase and the events of 16 October, President Barzani stressed that the elections held brought about a new reality, and for the people of Kurdistan, the main priority is to observe and adhere to the principles of partnership, consensus and balance in all areas of governance. There is a need for a precise mechanism for the implementation of those three principles, and the need to form alliances and agreements between the Iraqi parties regarding the positions and form of the future government in the light of those three principles.
In another part of the meeting, President Barzani commented on the functioning of the Electoral Commission, the conduct of the election process, its results and the recent decisions of the Iraqi House of Representatives. He also clarified that KDP has no representative on the Commission and stated that, in order to prevent the party from gaining the first place in Ninawa Governorate, they unjustly annulled the voices of the IDPs in the camps and sisters and brothers of the Yezidis. Despite this, Kurdistan Democratic Party is the real and the first winner in Ninawa Governorate.
With regard to the elections and forgeries, President Barzani has declared his approval of all actions taken either to follow up on complaints or vote recounting in any area, but the decision to annul the voices of Peshmerga without reason and for political aims and objectives is a great injustice that cannot be accepted. It is also a bad sign that means working to abolish Kurdistan region.
President Barzani also welcomed the role of the United Nations in assisting Iraqi political parties and addressing problems, in particular article 140 and Kurdistan areas outside the administration of the Kurdistan Region, stressing on the unacceptability of the imposition of a de facto reality and the continuation of the post-Oct. 16 situation, calling for the need to resolve them in accordance with Article 140 of the Constitution.
