Flow of Mosul IDPs to Kurdistan Continues on a Daily Bases

Despite the declaration of final victory over the Islamic State (IS) in Mosul long time ago, residents continue escaping the harsh conditions and seek refuge in Kurdistan Region, most of them for the second time.

Following the fall of Mosul to the hands of IS back in 2014, the majority of residents of Iraq’s northern city of Mosul escaped their homes, mostly residing in Kurdistan Region’s camps.

They returned to their homes after the massive city was announced free from IS in July 2017. However, the security situation, public services, employment, education and health services remain scarce even after the liberation.

Barzani Charity Foundation’s (BCF) said  that five to 15 families from Mosul are leaving the city on a daily basis. Head of BCF’s Mosul office, Rizgar Obeid, said they receive displaced families almost everyday in the camps the organization runs in Kurdistan Region. “They leave home for different reasons, and we do our best to provide them with all the necessary assistances.”

Obeid explained that the people of Mosul are mostly being displaced for the second time after they are disappoint by the conditions in post-IS Mosul. “There are IS sleeper cells who threaten the people in the city and cause this new flow of displacement,” he added.
