UN Secretary General Congratulates Nechirvan Barzani on Presidency

United Nations Secretary-general Antonio Guterres has congratulated Nechirvan Barzani on his election as the new President of the Kurdistan Region.

He further noted "I am sure that your leadership with your great experience and wisdom will be very effective to resolve any difficulties that may face the region."

The establishment of a new cabinet in Erbil could guarantee the maintenance of the achievements of the war against the Islamic State (IS) in the past few years, Guterres added, reiterating UN' support for the future Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Nechirvan Barzani, who was elected as the new president of the Kurdistan Region earlier the month in a parliamentary session, took oath on Monday.
