PM Barzani, US-led Coalition Commander Discuss Security

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday received a delegation from the Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve to review the current security situation in the region, including the threat of the Islamic State (IS) remnants.

During the meeting, CJTF-OIR Commanding General Paul J. LaCamera emphasized on the importance of close military coordinations between the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi government to counter the threats the remaining IS militants pose to the security of the region, according to the readout of the meeting.

He noted that the threat continues despite the defeat of IS on the battlefield, and that the security challenges are impeding the return of Iraqi IDPs to their homes.

PM Barzani reasserted that the current fragile security situation challenged by continued IS terrorist attacks is the result of root causes which initially led to the emergence of IS, and they are yet to be addressed.

The Kurdish prime minister emphasized that a stable Iraq would positively affect the security situation in the wider region.

He once again thanked the US-led Coalition for its support to the Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan Region during its battle against the Islamic State, the readout added.
