More Remains of Neanderthal Discovered in Kurdistan

Archeologists have discovered more remains of Neanderthal in the Kurdistan Region's Shanidar Cave, an official said on Tuesday.

Explaining in more details to media, Soran Amir, head of Archaeology department in Mergasor town of Erbil province, pointed out that the remains were found during the excavations carried out by a special team from Cambridge University as part of a ten-year agreement with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The team has discovered a skeleton believed to date back to around 70,000 years ago, he noted.

"These are remains of the tenth Neanderthals so far discovered in Shanidar Cave," Amir added.

The archaeological teams have previously discovered nine other Neanderthals at the same site which is located on Bradost Mountain, in capital Erbil.

The official also clarified that the remains would later be kept at a special museum in the Kurdistan Region, rejecting the rumours of it being taken abroad.
