Kurdistan President, UN Envoy Discuss Various Political, Security Affairs

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received on Monday the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, to discuss various political and security issues in Iraq and the region.

Barzani noted that there is peaceful dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to address the remaining disputes between the two sides, stressing on more suitable mechanisms for better outcomes from the efforts in this regard, and explaining that the joint committees could also be technical and not only political.

He further hailed the role of the UNAMI in assisting the federal and regional governments to resolve their issues.

The two officials additionally shed light on the future Iraqi budget, the situation in the disputed province of Kirkuk, the provincial elections in the city and other disputed territories, the article 140 from the Iraqi Constitution, and the political process in Iraq.

They also exchanged views on the affairs of the IDPs hosted in the Kurdistan Region and their return to their places of origin, while discussing the situation of the Yezidi IDPs, Sinjar area, and other related subjects.
