Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday received a UK diplomatic delegation led by British Ambassador to Iraq Jon Wilks in Erbil, during which the guests praised Kurdistan Regional Government’s reform plans.
Wilks told Barzani that the UK is optimistic about the progress in Kurdistan Region under the leadership of PM Barzani, according to the readout of the meeting.
The British diplomat, who will soon leave office in Baghdad to take over ambassadorship in Qatar, commended the Kurdistan Region for taking in thousands of refugees escaping violence in northern Syria. He agreed that the international community is required to provide assistance to the Kurdistan Region for shouldering a remarkable responsibility towards the refugees.
Barzani and Wilks shared views on rejecting any attempt to change the demography of the Syrian Kurdish territories, urging multilateral efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.
On Erbil-Baghdad relations, Barzani told the British ambassador and his accompanying delegation that Erbil has already put forward proposals to resolve the remaining disputes between the regional and federal governments, and that the Kurds are waiting for Baghdad to respond to the “constitutional rights demands” by the Kurdistan Region.
