KRG’s Rights Must Be Preserved in Case of Amendment to Iraq’s Constitution: Kurdistan Leadership

The leadership of the Kurdistan Region has reiterated its stance on a possible amendment to the Iraqi Constitution, saying that the rights of the people of the autonomous region must be preserved.

President Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, and Parliament Speaker Rewaz Fayiq met with several other senior officials from the three presidencies in Erbil on Tuesday to discuss the recent tensions in Iraq.

During the meeting, officials made it clear that the constitutional rights of the people of Kurdistan Region should not be reduced in any articles or sections of the Iraqi Constitution in case of an amendment to it, according to the information.

After the meeting, the three presidencies also met with the leaders of all Kurdish political parties, where Iraqi President Barham Salih was also present.

As protests have been ongoing in the capital Baghdad and several other cities against the government, there are attempts to amend the Iraqi Constitution, with the Kurdistan Region expressing concerns over its rights in this regard.
