Kurdistan Region Presidency’s Statement on Use of Violence Against Iraqi Protestors

We are gravely concerned about escalating events and continued violence in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities. Killing of civilian protesters on Sinak Bridge and Khillani square in Baghdad is a wanton crime and criminals, regardless of their affiliation, must be identified by relevant Iraqi authorities and face justice.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families, and wish the injured a speedy recovery. We reiterate that peaceful demonstration is a protected and constitutional right of Iraqis. The use of violence and attacks against protestors is unacceptable and unwarranted.

It is everyone’s national duty to diligently deal with the current situation and respect laws, in order to prevent further escalation of violence and bloodshed.
