A statement by the Kurdistan Region President

We are monitoring the developments in Iraq closely and with great concern as the crisis deepens in the country. While the risk of instability and further escalation of the political impasse could push the country towards an uncertain future, it is the duty of all the parties to responsibly come to terms with the circumstances and enter into an agreement according to the constitution and its procedures, and refuse to bow to political pressure.

In regards to the designation of Iraq’s future prime minister, enormous pressure has been mounted on President Barham Salih, contrary to the constitution and its proceedings. We reiterate that all solutions should be founded on the bases of the Iraqi charter and the legal means.

In order to designate a patriotic candidate for the post of the prime minister, whom the major parties would approve of, the legitimate grievances of the demonstrators and the interest of the country should be taken into consideration. The future government should also be supported in order to manage the forthcoming transition period and the preparations for new elections.
