Kurdistan Region Parliament on Monday strongly condemned the remarks by Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary general of the Lebanese Hezbollah, who disrespected the Kurdish nation, Peshmerga forces, and the Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani.
“We completely reject the remarks by Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah who unfairly assaulted President Barzani and the Peshmerga forces who are the symbols of resistance against the Islamic State,” reads an official statement by the parliament.
“It was the Peshmerga forces who sacrificed their lives and broke the aura of the Islamic State to score a historic victory.”
The statement reminds that senior members of Hassan Nasrallah’s Hezbollah were indeed among the militias who attacked the Kurds in October 2017 in Kirkuk, during which hundreds of thousands of Kurds were displaced.
In a speech delivered to remember Iran’s top general Qasem Soleimani, Nasrollah claimed that the Iranians saved Erbil and Kurdistan Region against the Islamic State. He insulted Kurds and their political leaders in his speech which angered many in Kurdistan.
The Kurdistan Region parliament asserted that Kurds respect all those who ever lend them a helping hand, “but we will not accept any disrespects towards the Peshmerga and our national symbols”.
