Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attended a ceremony today to commemorate the victims of the twin suicide bombings in Erbil 16 years ago.
PM Barzani laid flowers to the monument for the 101 people who lost their lives in the massive explosions. He was accompanied by cabinet ministers at the ceremony.
On 1st February 2004, two suicide bombers in two separate attacks blew themselves up inside the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), killing 101 people and wounding hundreds more.
Among the victims were senior officials, Peshmerga commanders, and civilians who had gathered to celebrate the first day of Eid al-Adha.
Later, a monument was set up in Sami Abdulrahman Park, who was among the victims himself. Today’s ceremony was held at the site, with hundreds of senior officials, families of the victims and other people who laid flowers and paid tribute to the victims.
