In a zoom meeting with Darby Parliament, Head of the Political and Economic Section at the US Consulate General in the Kurdistan Region, a number of issues relevant to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq were covered. KDP views on them were presented.
One of the topics discussed was the recent temporary agreement between the Federal and Regional Governments. We viewed the agreement as the right step in the right direction and hoped that all the outstanding issues be resolved. The military operations on the border areas by Turkey and Iran were highlighted and their devastating impact on the lives and livelihoods of the people were brought to the attention of Mr. Parliament. Other topics of discussion were the ongoing strategic dialogue between US and Iraq, relations between KDP and PUK and challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Parliament expressed his delight on concluding an agreement between Erbil and Baghdad and hoped this will open the way for concluding a wider and more inclusive agreement in the near future. He also viewed the rapprochement between KDP and PUK as an important step to create the needed internal unity.
Mr. Parliament reiterated the US support for a strong Kurdistan Region and stated that the Consulate will do its utmost to strengthen ties between the USA and the Region.
