Germany Reiterates Commitment to Supporting Peshmerga

Germany has reaffirmed that it will continue to support the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces as part of the US-led Coalition mission in the region.

This comes two days after Islamic State (IS) militants carried out an attack on Peshmerga positions near Pirde, south of capital Erbil, where three Kurdish fighters were killed and two others were injured.

"We are saddened by the deaths of Peshmerga fighters who were attacked by ISIS terrorists," German Consulate in Erbil wrote on Twitter on Sunday. "Our thoughts are with the families of the victims."

Germany has been one of the main members of the Global Coalition to provide military and advisory assistance to the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces over the past few years.

"Germany will continue to support the Peshmerga and work as part of OIR to defeat completely ISIS," the statement added.
