On May 5, 2021, President Masoud Barzani received the British Defense Ministry Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa (Sami Sampson) and his accompanying delegation, which included the British Ambassador to Iraq, Seven Hickey, and the British Consul General in Erbil, James Thornton and British Military Advisors.
During the meeting, which was attended by Hoshyar Zebari and Mahmoud Muhammad, members of the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the guest delegation emphasized the great importance of stability and development of the Kurdistan Region to Britain, and they announced that their country hopes to contribute in its turn to addressing the problems and overcoming the challenges facing Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
At the meeting, views and opinions were exchanged on the political situation in the region and the upcoming elections in Iraq. Regarding confronting ISIS, President Barzani stressed that despite defeating ISIS militarily, uprooting it from the roots requires joint efforts and an intellectual, economic and social war against terrorism, and to end the causes that led to the emergence of ISIS.
