On May 26, 2021, President Masoud Barzani received the German Ambassador to Iraq, Ole Diehl.
During the meeting, the German Ambassador to Iraq bid farewell to President Barzani as his post in Iraq is coming to an end, and reiterated his country's continued commitment to friendly relations with the Kurdistan Region and its permanent support, stressing the special importance of the Region and its status for Germany. He also declared that the territory was the ideal part of Iraq and that it was a haven and shelter for the afflicted residents of other parts of Iraq.
For his part, President Barzani thanked the people and government of Germany for the assistance granted to the people of Kurdistan and peshmerga forces during the war against ISIS and stressed the need to strengthen friendly relations between the two sides. In another part of the meeting, President Barzani reiterated his support for the tasks and activities of the German Consulate, diplomatic missions as well as civilian activities, declaring that the people of Kurdistan had sacrificed a lot of blood to reach stability and freedom.
Relations between Kurdistan Region and Baghdad and the upcoming Iraqi election was another focus of the meeting, in which the German ambassador revealed his country's desire to help Iraqis during the electoral process within the framework of the United Nations and the European Union.
