Guerrillas of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) on Monday evening attacked the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces in northeast of capital Erbil, the Peshmerga Ministry has revealed.
Jamal Iminki, Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Ministry, explained in a statement that the incident took place in an area between Khalifan and Bekhma, in Soran district, northeast of Erbil.
The PKK fighters opened fire at a checkpoint of the Peshmerga forces and that the Peshmerga fighters responded to the attack with intial reports of possible casualties, he added.
Iminki further warned that the Peshmerga forces would respond to any attacks by the PKK fighters.
This is not the first time that the PKK carries out such attacks on the Peshmerga forces in different areas of Kurdistan Region, particularly in Erbil and Duhok provinces, lately.
There have been casualties as a result of previous attacks on the Peshmerga fighters by the PKK.
