KRG Continues the Efforts to Recognize IS Genocides

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will continue its efforts with other partners to recognize the crimes committed by the Islamic State (IS) as genocide, said KRG Spokesperson Jotiar Adil.

On Monday, KRG’s Committee for the Recognition of IS Genocides, held a meeting under the auspices of Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed, after which Adil said in a press conference that they are working on the case with the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Daesh (UNITAD), the Iraqi Federal Government and other international partners.

He said today’s meeting focused on the establishment of a special court which will be able to try those behind the IS crimes and recognize the genocides committed in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, especially in the disputed Kurdish areas like Sinjar.

Dindar Zebari, KRG’s International Advocacy Coordinator, told reporters during the press conference that the KRG has taken significant steps towards the goal in cooperation with the UNITAD, the UN Security Council, and the United Nations in general.

Kurdistan Region’s Council of Ministers in October 2020 established the special Committee for Recognition of IS Crimes, which is chaired by Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed.
