President Massoud Barzani met with Claudia Roth, the co-chair of Germany’s Green Party and her accompanying delegation that included Rolf Ulrich, Germany’s consul-general in Erbil.
At the meeting, both sides focused on bilateral relations, developments in Turkey, the crisis in Syria and the on-going challenges facing the political process in Iraq.
On discussing Turkey, President Barzani expressed his hope that the recently-initiated peace process can succeed and reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s full support for this process.
Mr Barzani said the Kurdistan Region is ready to contribute to any way possible to ensure this peace process succeeds. For her part, Ms Roth paid tribute to the positive role played by Mr Barzani in helping to bring about this peace process by stating that without his role, this peace process would have never gotten underway.
On the Syrian crisis, Mr Barzani stated the situation in Syria will have a direct effect on Iraq and on the Kurdistan Region. Since the start of the conflict, over 100,000 refugees have sought refuge in the Kurdistan Region and the number is increasing on a daily basis, he added.
