The European Union has decided to expand its representation and establish a permanent representation in the Kurdistan region.

President Barzani receives the Ambassador of the European Union to Iraq

On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, President Masoud Barzani received the Ambassador of the European Union to Iraq, Ville Varjola, and his accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, the European Union Ambassador indicated that the European Union views the Kurdistan Region with interest and appreciates the role of the Kurdistan Region in maintaining stability of Iraq and the region. He added that the European Union decided to expand its representation and establish a permanent representation in the Kurdistan region.

In the meeting, President Barzani expressed his happiness with the European Union's decision to open a permanent representation of the European Union in the Kurdistan Region. With regard to the Region's elections, he said that the Kurdistan Democratic Party is with holding the region's elections as soon as possible, and called on the international community to play a role in assisting and monitoring the Region’s elections.

With regard to the Iraqi political crisis, President Barzani reiterated that the causes of the political crisis in Iraq are non-compliance with the constitution and that any government that will be formed in Iraq in the future must be based on a broad and strong program, and protect the rights of the Kurdistan Region, taking into account the principles of partnership, balance and consensus, within the framework of the constitution and dialogue.
