President of Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani received Pope Francis’ special emissary, Cardinal Fernando Filoni, for talks on the current crisis in northern Iraq and the internally displaced civilians trapped by Islamic militants on Mount Sinjar.
Pope Francis delivered a special message to Mr Barzani via Cardinal Filoni, expressing his personal gratitude for his assistance providing displaced people with humanitarian aid, noting the previous struggles and disasters the Kurdish people have faced however encouraged the Kurdistan nation to enhance a peaceful coexistence between its populations.
The Pope highlighted that the Kurdistan region is known for its embrace of all nationalities and religions, which the rest of the world must recognise.

On the threat of terrorism, Mr Barzani briefed to the visiting delegation that Kurdistan is fighting “a terrorist state on behalf of the world,”
At the end of the meeting, Mr Barzani conveyed his compliments to Pope Francis and reassured that his forces will protect all religious components in Kurdistan.
