President Barzani: We are facing the fanaticism of a terrorist state

 

Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani received the French Ambassador to Iraq, Jean-Francois Girault, to discuss the humanitarian situation of internally displaced civilians on Mount Sinjar, the political persecution of Christians and the ongoing battle against Islamic militants in northern Iraq.

Ambassador Girault expressed his thanks to President Barzani for the meeting and emphasised his concerns of the people of Kurdistan in the challenges and problems they face due to the recent terrorist attacks, saying he was confident that the Kurdistan region is on the right path and can continue their campaign.

The historical relationship between the two sides were highlighted during their talks, with Mr Girault affirmed France is prepared to provide assistance at any time where the people of Kurdistan under threat. He noted that his country will continue to provide humanitarian assistance and military equipment, urging other European countries to be more active in providing assistance, noting that the Iraqi government must deal with the security situation in the region.

Mr Barzani welcomed the delegation, while adding that Kurdistan is facing a “terrorist state”, not just an organisation, and thanked France for their support in standing by the Kurdish people at this time of crisis. He also said the responsibility bears with the Iraq government that did not assume liability for the displaced civilians who were forced to flee their homes due to advances by so-called Islamic State militants.
