Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani said during a joint press conference in Erbil with Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Javad Zarif that the Peshmerga forces will continue attacking jihadists belonging to militant group ‘Islamic State’ expressing hope that “Kurdistan’s honour will roll back IS.”
Minister Zarif said his country hails Kurdistan with “significant importance to security and stability in Iraq,” and is confident the region can defend itself against terrorism, calling for an all-out combat against rebels and urging trans-regional bodies to fulfil their responsibilities for tacking “the common threat.”
On the formation of the new Iraqi government, Zarif said he encourages the leadership to work within immediate timeframe on forming an administration; stressing that Iran supports Kurdistan in every aspect hoping to see an end to the ongoing disputes between Erbil and Baghdad.
Barzani reiterated that the IS cannot and will not achieve its objectives and reassured that they will be defeated as his own forces are in positions to attack as they have already regained lost ground in northern Iraq.
Zarif arrived in Erbil on Tuesday at the city’s international airport, where KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, received him.
