Nechirvan Barzani welcomes the formation of an international coalition

Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani, received the Canadian Ambassador to Iraq, Bruno Saccomani. The pair discussed many important issues including the formation of an international coalition against Islamic State.

During the meeting, they discussed the recent visit of the Canadian Foreign Minister, and Barzani expressed his delight and appreciation towards the Canadian government for their role in assisting the KRG for humanitarian assistance. Barzani also noted that Canada was amongst the states that responded swiftly to support the Kurdistan region in the fight against terrorism.

The pair also spoke about the international efforts against the IS militias, and, highlighted the formation of an international coalition against IS. The Prime Minister welcomed the formation proposed by the United States of America – which includes members of the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) – and hopes this coalition will see troops on the ground as soon as possible. The Canadian Ambassador counter-praised by acknowledging the Peshmerga’s confrontation of the IS militia, on all fronts, and praised the recent substantial victories.

It was also noted by Barzani that he is extremely proud of the Peshmerga, but called on the international community to provide all kinds of assistance to confront terrorism in the best way.

During the closing stages of the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between Kurdistan and Canada. Barzani thanked Saccomani for his prominent role in the development of the relations between the two sides. Saccomani stated that to strengthen relations between the two parties, a trade and economic delegation would arrive in Kurdistan, early next year.
