Saturday 20th September – The delegation representing the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s Foreign Relations Office, led by Hemin Hawrami, and consisting of his colleagues Abdoulsalam Zebari and Lisa Kakai, held meetings with representatives of the political parties in presence at the Conference of Asian Political Parties, in Colombo.

Hawrami was locked in talks with Nikolai Livigave, the deputy head of the Russian Parliament (Duma) and his delegation, where he highlighted the latest developments and political situation in Kurdistan, and in particular, the war against ISIL militants. Hawrami stressed that Peshmerga forces engaging in battle with the militants, and along with the 1.5 million refugees displaced in the region, Kurdistan is now facing the negative effects on this situation.  He then asked for help from the Russian state on behalf of the Kurdistan region with its fight against terrorism, but without causing diplomatic issues with the United States, and without causing geopolitical issues.

The FRO delegation also held several meetings with other participants of the conference, most notably with representatives from India’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata. Their foreign relations delegation thanked the Kurdistan region, on behalf of the Indian government, for their role in the release of several Indian workers who were kidnapped by ISIL terrorists. They both wished to develop bilateral relations between the two parties and the KDP FRO received an official invitation to visit India.

During the later stages of the day, the delegation held bilateral meetings with representatives from the Pakistan parliament and Malaysia’s ruling party, the Barisan Nasional.  The delegation also participated in a dinner where the Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaka, was in attendance.
