Masrour Barzani received the a delegation from the Canadian Ministry of Defence led by Chief of Staff Gen. Thomas Lawson and a number of senior military officials at a meeting to discuss the military situation in the Kurdistan Region.
The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Mr Barzani, conversed on the various methods of support and assistance Kurdish forces can receive to progress further in the battle against terrorist organisation, Islamic State (ISIS).
He requested further military assistance in order to effectively eliminate extremism and stressed on the need to equip Peshmerga forces and said, “We are the only force that can defeat Islamic State,”
The delegation applauded the Peshmerga forces and the people of Kurdistan for their resistance against the terrorists.
Peshmerga forces cut a key road linking Mosul to Tal Afar, degrading the grip of the radical group on northern areas of Iraq and setting the ground for an anticipated operation to recapture Mosul, which has been under ISIS control since June last year.
Canada is a key ally of Kurdistan that stood by the region in its war against militants through participation and providing military aid, while Gen. Thomas noted that his country can accommodate the requirements of Peshmerga forces and wishes to enhance already strong ties.
