President Barzani's Message on the 42nd Anniversary of Anfal of the Barzanis

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Each year, there are few days that pass without recalling the tragedies, crimes, and injustices inflicted upon the people of Kurdistan by the Iraqi government. Today marks the 42nd anniversary of a horrific event when the former Iraqi regime led 8,000 Barzani men—ranging in age from nine to ninety—into the deserts of southern Iraq, where they were brutally executed in a mass massacre. This atrocity was part of a broader campaign against the Kurdish people, which included the disappearance of 12,000 young Fayli Kurds, the Anfal operations in Garmian and Badinan, the chemical bombing of Halabja and other regions, as well as the forced Arabization and deportation of Kurdish citizens.

The mindset that fueled these crimes was rooted in chauvinism and denial, leading to widespread suffering and stagnation across Iraq. Regrettably, there are still individuals who have not learned from history and continue to embrace this same mentality in their political actions. It is imperative for everyone to understand that as long as such attitudes persist, Iraq will remain devoid of peace and stability.

On this solemn anniversary of the Barzani Anfal, I would like to express my gratitude to the people of Erbil, Harir, and the Soran Plains, who stood by the Barzani community during those trying times, offering support and assistance. I also wish to honor the resilience of the victims' families, particularly the Barzani mothers and women who have endured the pain of losing their loved ones for many years. Today, we send heartfelt greetings to the souls of the Barzani Anfal martyrs, all Anfal martyrs, and those who have sacrificed for the freedom of Kurdistan.
