ERBIL, KDP FRO
The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani stressed the need to hold a referendum on the mechanism of election of the President of the Kurdistan Region in the event of failure of the political parties in the region to commit to a political consensus.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines during the opening ceremony of the European Union Representation in Erbil on Sunday, Mr Barzani said a referendum should be held that would resolve the calamity of disputes of the Kurdistan presidency.
They insist that the four political parties – the PUK, Islamic Union, Islamic group and Change Movement –opt to hold democratic elections for the role of president as opposed to their preferred parliamentary votes.
On the emergency session of parliament, which was held on 19 August 2015, the head of the provincial government said, “the four political parties did not abide by the agreement concerning the adjournment of the meeting.”
