Iraq’s Kurdistan Region is currently locked in an impasse over an extension to the term of President Masoud Barzani, with his party stating that the issue should be resolved by the people.
Mr Barzani, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region and Head of Security Council (KRSC) said, “If [political] parties do not reach a consensus then we should return to the people’s decision to elect their president,”
His comments came after a KDP delegation led by Mr Barzani and members of the party including Dr Kamal Kirkuki visited the Turkmen and Assyrian parties, adding that democracy should prevail in such circumstances.
The other political parties in the Kurdistan region – the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Islamic Union and the Change Movement (Gorran) held its fourth meeting in Suleymania on Sunday to debate the ongoing presidency issue.
