EU representative says Kurdistan is a leading model of democracy and coexistence

Hemin Hawrami underlined the importance of a European Union office in Kurdistan and is considered a means of direct communication between Kurdistan and Europe, the Kurdistan Democratic Party's Head of Foreign Relations Office declares support for this motion.

This came during a meeting between Mr Hawrami and Counsellor Patrick Geysen , Eu Lialson Office Erbil 

Mr Hawrami noted that interest of European countries to Kurdistan is largely a symbol of recognition of the democratic and peaceful co-existence of the region which the Kurdish people fought many decades.

He pointed out that Kurds are defending democracy in the war against terrorism in its entire valour and the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces have achieved great victories against the Islamic State terrorist organisation.

The international coalition and European allies have played key roles in aiding Peshmerga forces to recapture major territories and supporting victims of war.

On the subject of refugees and displaced people, Mr Hawrami also said Kurdistan has received a large number of citizens amid its own economic troubles.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the political developments in Iraq and the relations between Erbil and Baghdad and the latest military objectives in the region.

Mr Jessen thanked the people of Kurdistan for resisting terrorism and the vast amount of refugees and displaced people they have sheltered.

He referred to the Kurdistan Region as a model of democracy and peaceful coexistence in the Middle East.
