Hawrami and Russian General Consul discuss the latest developments in the region

Hemin Hawrami head of Kurdistan Democratic Party’s Foreign Relations Office received the Russian Consul General, in Erbil, Victor Simakov.

During the meeting, the Consul General of the Russian praised the security and the stability of Kurdistan. He noted the importance of relations between Russia and Kurdistan and expressed ways to develop these relations further. The Russian consul then explained his country's policy towards some of the issues concerning the region

For his part, Hawrami said the people of Kurdistan welcome any attempt by the Russian government to help combat the terrorist group ‘ISIS’, and hoped that these attempts will be in cooperation with the US and other members of the international coalition in the war against ISIS. Hawrami mentioned the successful liberation of over 27,000 kilometres from ISIS by the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces.

The pair also spoke on the current situation surrounding Iraqi politics, where Hawrami stated that Iraq is currently divided, and it is difficult to control the provincial administrations of Mosul, Anbar, and Basra, from Baghdad.

Hawrami also spoke on the situation regarding Kurdistan’s presidency, and said the position of the Kurdistan Democratic Party is to solve this crisis via democratic means, and the president should be directly elected by the people, and have power, not just protocols.

The political situation in Syria and the region was another focus of the meeting.
