The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani was received in Tehran on Saturday by Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Jawad Zarif for talks on strengthening bilateral relations between the two sides and their respective economic status.
Their meetings comes as the German government had officially invited Mr Barzani to its ‘Munich Security Conference’ that is being held in the Iranian capital.
Speaking about the political situation in Kurdistan, Mr Zarif stressed on the need to preserve unity of Kurdish political parties when dealing with internal disputes and look to resolve them through dialogue. He reflected on the ongoing issues between the KRG and central government in Baghdad that both sides should resolutely improve relations and ease tensions.
Mr Barzani thanked Mr Zarif for the reception and continued humanitarian support for displaced people as a result of conflict and oppression from the terrorist organisation Islamic State.
He expressed the willingness of the region to provide the necessary support to promote and strengthen trade and economic relations between Kurdistan and the Republic of Iran. On the domestic front, Mr Barzani said he values Iran's high role in preserving unity while the Kurdish political parties dispute the presidential crisis, stressing that the KRG will proceed to take some necessary steps in order to restore calm and stability to the region.
