President Barzani calls for immediate provincial elections and inquiry into early parliamentary ballot

Salahadin, Kurdistan Region – Iraq (KDP.info) – In a televised speech today, Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, called for provincial elections to be held as soon as possible and for the Parliament to study the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections. President Barzani, in an address to the nation following recent public protests, said he was pleased that Kurdistan’s young people had the political maturity to make their demands known through peaceful demonstrations. He said that participating in demonstrations was the natural right of the people and that he did not want to live in a Kurdistan where the people did not enjoy such rights. He asked that violence should be avoided at all times. “My voice is with those who ask for reform and social justice,” the President said, adding that real action should be taken, not measures that only deal with the symptoms, and that the process of reform must be constant. He called on the Kurdistan Parliament and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to begin preparations for elections to the provincial councils of Erbil, Dohuk and Suleimaniah as soon as possible. He also asked the Kurdistan Parliament to study the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections. The next elections are due in 2013. He once again extended his condolences to the families of those killed during the recent protests and called on the KRG to provide all the medical care and support to the wounded.
