KDP Foreign Relations Office thanks UNAMI for 22 years of service to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Foreign Relations Office has expressed its gratitude to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for 22 years of service, following the decision to conclude the mission’s mandate on December 31, 2025.

Hoshyar Siwaily, head of the KDP Foreign Relations Office, hosted a luncheon for the UNAMI team and commended their contributions since the mission’s establishment under UN Security Council Resolution 1500 in 2003. Over more than two decades, UNAMI has played a central role in supporting Iraq’s political process, democratic transition, national reconciliation, election preparation, human rights monitoring, and coordination among UN agencies.

Mr. Siwaily noted that UNAMI has served as a vital bridge between Iraq’s internal developments and the international community—an effort deserving the appreciation of the people of the Kurdistan Region in general, and the KDP in particular.

The decision to end UNAMI’s mandate followed a request from the Iraqi Federal Government. The Kurdistan Region views this as a political decision and believes Iraq still needs international coordination and support to further strengthen state institutions and advance the democratic process. During a recent visit to Baghdad, UN Secretary-General António Guterres described this transition as the beginning of a new page in the relationship between the United Nations and Iraq.

While acknowledging the sovereign considerations behind the decision, the KDP Foreign Relations Office expressed concern about ending UNAMI’s mandate. Mr. Siwaily stressed that Iraq continues to require strong UN engagement to bolster institutions, promote good governance, and facilitate dialogue among its diverse communities. He emphasized that UNAMI’s presence has been crucial in helping manage disputes between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region.

The KDP extends its best wishes to UNAMI’s staff and thanks them for their professionalism and service. Mr. Siwaily reaffirmed the importance of a continued international role to support stability, protect rights, and help achieve inclusive, effective governance that serves the interests of all Iraqis.
